Covering just the absolute essentials,

Our service cost for P+ then comes to $3.62 (ex GST)

Budgeting this amount allows us to replace our used items. I don't know about you, but I like to have the latest collections in salon. I need to budget EXTRA for this - which for me works out to be another $1.93 per service. This is an extra 6 colours and 6 glitters every 3 months, or 48 new colours for the whole year.

Our current cost per service now comes to $5.55 (ex GST)

These are all items you use within the service that are "disposable" or near disposable... but what about your tools that you use multiple times? Such as your LE Dot, Zippy & Bits... these are some costs that are easy to leave out, but when the time comes to upgrade or replace these items, it can really hurt your bank account if you haven't budgeted for them!

These cost per use figures are estimated based on replacing within a generous frequency. For example, we should expect to replace our LE Dot within 3 years of purchase, so let's budget for replacing within 2 years, just in case!

These add another $1.50 to the service cost - seems like not too much right?

But in a week, this could be an extra $30, or an extra $1,380 a year (20 clients a week, 46 weeks of the year). I think $1,380 is worth budgeting for, don't you?

Compiling this information,

our total LE product cost when completing a P+ Soak Off Manicure is $7.05

If we see 20 P+ clients a week, and work 46 weeks of the year, we would expect to spend around $6,485 (ex GST) on product.

If you are wondering where the 46 weeks comes from, we should not be targeting income for 52 weeks of the year, because everyone needs and deserves a break. The national minimum Annual Leave allowance for full time employees in NZ is 4 weeks, and the sick leave allowance is 2 weeks.

In my salon, my full product cost for a P+ Soak Off Service is $16.40

This includes covering EVERYTHING I use for the service, from my desk and drawers, to the P+ Gels & finishing the service with a hot towel.

It also covers LEPro Remover and removal foils, however most of the time now I will completely file off the old product rather than partially filing and soaking.

I also add an encapsulating layer of Crystal Clear JimmyGel after colour application, but before P+ Top Coat, to add longevity and security of the service.

So, now we know how much this service is costing us, surely it's simple to say we want to earn $40 an hour, plus the product cost of $6.95

-> if we charge $50 we are making more than enough... right?

I hate to pop this bubble but, while every business is run differently, if we use my salon as an example, my operating expenses for that service are over double the product cost for this service.

To make minimum wage, if this was my main service offering I would need to charge at least $100 for this service.

Given that "market rate" would put a Gel Manicure anywhere from $30-$60... this is a big jump up.

I hope this is starting to highlight the issue with pricing in the industry!
